Atherton

Atherton is on the Peninsula north of Stanford University and Menlo Park.  It is one of the most expensive places to live in the United States.   One acre lots with tear down homes in Central Atherton have sold for $10 million.   This geography is mostly flat and features large, gated estates and literally, mansions.  One can find the occasional smaller lot and tiny home for $2M, but that is the exception in this community.  The land use policies prohibit commercial or industrial development, so residents mostly use downtown Menlo Park for their closest shopping.   To the north, the improving Redwood City is another venue for movies and dining out.  The town government aims to preserve a small town atmosphere.  There is an abundance of high-caliber private schools nearby including Sacred Heart, Menlo School and Phillips Brooks schools.   Many homes here are sold off-market for to maintain privacy for the sellers.  Residents of Atherton are among the most prestigious executives, founders and venture capitalists of Silicon Valley as well as famous entertainers and philanthropists.
